Greetings and welcome to my blog!
My name is Josue, I'm a 22 year old Latino and first generation higher ed student born and raised by two immigrant parents in the southwest. I am married to a beautiful soon to be primary school teacher who loves challenging me on a daily basis, but I love her for it. We have a small tick that we carry around named Phil who reminds us of the rarity that is loyalty and unconditional companionship - if you haven't caught on, he's a dog despite the fact that he refuses to act like one (i.e. refuses to sit anywhere but on the couch, sleeps only on our bed, and eats only at the kitchen table). Sometimes I feel we live to serve him - but I'll stick to the loyal dog card for sanity sake. I am the eldest of three to a single mom and grew up most of my life in West Phoenix. I hope this gives you a good idea on my background.
For the past five years I have been fully committed to my eduction culminating my MPA this Spring (thank god!). Last year, I wraped up my undergrad in Public Service and Public Policy and was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award by the School of Public Affairs. I've had the honor to serve as an ASU Spirit of Service Scholar for the class of 2014 and a Gates Millennium Scholar for the class of 2010.
Outside of school I try to keep busy working in various capacities to find my niche in public service. Through my still early career, I've worked at cafes and retail, helped run campaigns, advocated and protected immigrant rights, analyzed public policy with respects to at risk communities, evaluated and administered health initiatives and helped provide professional development for appx 80 AmeriCorps members. Throughout it all however, never did I think I'd end up in the world of business. To say this opportunity with U.S. Dept of Commerce/ U.S. Commercial Service aiding in the expansion of International Trade in Arizona came out of left field would be an accurate statement. Nonetheless however, I think I've found my niche!
My three goals this semester are to:
- Find a job closely aligned with my new found passion for the power economic development can have on transforming communities; particularly with respects to international trade.
- Enhance my network to fortify my success in this field.
- Have fun!
- Josue Macias
